Private
Sector Development
Nathan EME is at the forefront of the new thinking on
Private Sector Development
Our key competencies cover business environment reform, trade and
investment promotion, making markets work, and enterprise
restructuring / privatisation. Our work has emphasised participatory
approaches to development, through which the public and private
sector supply different tools in the construction of programmes that
support emergent companies and markets. Our overall focus remains on
inducing the private sector to play its key role in the creation of
investment and wealth, and ensuring that all segments of society are
able to participate in economic growth.
We strongly believe that poverty reduction must be placed at the
centre of private sector development. The rate of poverty reduction
is crucially dependent upon the extent to which the poor have
opportunities to participate and benefit from growth. This means
that policies must go beyond simply promoting growth in and of
itself. PSD strategies must ensure that the pattern of growth is not
biased against the poor, and that the poor are empowered to take
advantage of the opportunities that growth provides.
We are critically aware that implementation of reforms is often the
most difficult component of change. In many settings and situations,
the required reforms are well known and understood by many, but the
lack of a consensus for change prevents reform from occurring. In
these circumstances, we invest a considerable amount of time in
developing reform promotion strategies.
We have undertaken PSD projects in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and
the Americas. A selection of recent projects in this area can be
found below. For any additional information, please do not hesitate
